Avengers stars apologize for sexist slurs aimed at Black Widow

Press junkets seem hellish from the outside. You're often locked in a single room for hours at a time, forced to deal with a parade of interviewers often asking the same questions. It's an exhausting way to spend a day, and stars of big budgets films are contractually obligated to spend many days doing exactly that as they travel to promote their movie.

That being said, c'mon guys. Calling Black Widow a "slut" and "whore" for perhaps being attracted to multiple people across the series, even if it's just in the minds of fans, is way over the line. You can watch the video of the interview above.

The idea that, in the years between films, a female character changing her affections from one character to another makes her a "slut" or a "complete whore" is ridiculous, and those words are so far beyond what should be acceptable when discussing one of the few female characters in your film that it's absurd.

Both stars look like stereotypical frat boys who were caught saying something naughty but can't help themselves after they denigrate Black Widow. Renner goes to state, bafflingly, that she "has a prosthetic leg anyway."

Then came the apologies.

"Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America," Chris Evans said in a statement provided, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. "We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize."

Jeremy Renner, on the other hand, offered a classic non-pology in his statement. "I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone," he said. "It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour."
