Here's what you may have missed in Just Cause 3's explosive new trailer

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 15 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

Just Cause 3 publisher Square Enix released an insane gameplay trailer today to show off the game's open-world mayhem. What's more, a close analysis from developer Avalanche Studios points out gameplay details like gear upgrades and destructible environments. Oh, and explosions.

Our hero, Rico Rodriguez, uses three main tools to traverse the Mediterranean island of Medici. Along with his trusty parachute and grappling hook, he now sports a wingsuit that lets him glide at speed around the world. A grappling hook upgrade now allows him to tether as many as five things together — where the term "things" also includes people, of course. Rico can also use the grappling hook to hang upside-down from the underside of vehicles and other objects, like so:

Physics-based destruction in Just Cause 3 means that Medici and the man-made structures on it will look just as good when they're being obliterated as they do when they're still standing. Fuel depots, buildings, radio towers and even bridges will crumble and go boom. There's some environmental destruction, too: namely, plants such as trees and flowers. And Rico can really get creative with a new vehicle, the monorail, and walk atop it (or any vehicle) with his expanded "stunting" skill.

Just Cause 3 is set for release this holiday season on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.
