Playtonic, a U.K.-based team made up of former Rare developers, today launched a Kickstarter for its new game, Yooka-Laylee. Within less than an hour, the game passed its $270,000 goal, and is currently ticking-up at a rapid clip.
Platforms for the game have also been announced: Yooka-Laylee is planned for release on Windows PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U.
In Yooka-Laylee, two characters form a symbiotic relationship, platforming and puzzle-solving using each's special powers. Yooka is a green chameleon who carries jokester bat Laylee on its back. The colorful 3D game is set across five worlds, with items to collect. Yooka's special move is a tongue grapple while Laylee utilizes a sonar blast
Playtonic's Kickstarter also features soundtrack samples that will take you right back to Banjo-Kazooie.
Yooka-Laylee is described by Playtonic as a "3D platformer from the creative talent behind the Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country games." The Kickstarter pitch video shows gameplay footage, characters and a soundtrack significantly redolent of Banjo-Kazooie, a big 1998 hit on Nintendo 64, and its sequels.
