Why does food matter in games?

The latest episode of PBS Game/Show explores the greatest gift known to mankind — food — with a simple, burning question: "Why is there so much food in video games?"

Host Jamin Warren first dives into the importance of food, beyond the obvious; culture, social bonding and, of course, the comfort aspect. But while food is all-around important to us, its varying role in games is rarely ever discussed, he says. Food impacts everything in games, from serving as a health restoration item to being the very basis of the experience, as in Cooking Mama. It can also vastly change the way players enjoy a game, whether it acts as a simple extra or a must-have item.

Check out the video above for more on the often unexpected ways that food matters in games like Rust, Pac-Man, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and more.
