The new Need for Speed will be revealed this week

Electronic Arts will unveil its next Need for Speed game on May 21, according to a post on the game's Facebook — and it looks like it might be another entry in the franchise's Underground series of games.

EA updated its Need for Speed profile today with a message that it will offer a peek at "the return of NFS" on YouTube this Thursday. The image posted alongside that message is very dark, but altering the levels in Photoshop reveals what appears to be a pair of brightly colored street cars, invoking the style of Need for Speed Underground.

The company may have been hinting at a return of the tuner culture-focused Underground in a post this weekend. EA posted footage of Need for Speed Underground 2 to Facebook on Sunday, saying, "We've gone old school this weekend, hands up if you've been playing this recently?"

EA's next Need for Speed game will be released later this year, sometime during the fourth quarter. After taking a year off from the annual franchise, developer Ghost Games said it would release a new game in 2015 that would be "highly innovative" and build "on a foundation we know you'll greatly look forward to."

A possible teaser image for this year's Need for Speed can be seen below.
