Here's how to import your Witcher 2 Steam save into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

You're a lifelong Witcher fan. You rigorously prepared your Witcher 2 save to import into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt only to find that when you begin your game, you are only given the option to "Simulate Witcher 2 Save."

If this happens, it's likely that your save games are not in the right place. The Witcher 3 expects that your save games live in ":\Users\[username]\My Documents\Witcher 2\gamesaves" but if you've ever enabled Steam Cloud Saving, your saves will be in a different location.

To fix this up and allow The Witcher 3 to find your saves,  you'll need to find and move them to the expected directory. The saves will live in ":\Program Files(x86)\Steam\userdata\[userid]\20920\remote." Simply copy the files here to ":\Users\[username]\My Documents\Witcher 2\gamesaves" and you'll be given the proper option to import a Witcher 2 save when starting a new game in The Witcher 3.
