Lando Calrissian is in perfect hibernation, waiting to return to Star Wars

Lando Calrissian, the suave former caretaker of Cloud City, could return to the Star Wars cinematic universe, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan told Vanity Fair.

"Right now, there’s no Lando Calrissian in this movie," Kasdan said, referring to Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, which hits theaters Dec. 18. "But Lando I don’t think is finished in any way, shape or form."

Early this year, Billy Dee Williams reprised his role in an episode of the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. In February, he teased Lando's return, just as Kasdan would months later.

"Yeah, people were pretty upset about it," Williams said of his absence in The Force Awakens. "But I uh … I may very well … I have a feeling I’m going to show up. There’s nothing I can really discuss about it at this stage."

So if Lando will return, when would he do so? His history in Star Wars might contain hints of his future.

Williams' character joined the galaxy far, far away in the original trilogy's second installment, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back and reprised his role in Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi. Though The Force Awakens, will include much of the cast from the original trilogy, Williams is not among them.

If history is a guide, we could see him in Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is scheduled for a May, 26 2017 theatrical release — 40 years to the day that the original movie hit theaters. Press play below to watch The Force Awakens' second trailer one more time.
