Cheat in Guild Wars 2, and you run the risk of alienating players and incurring the wrath of developer ArenaNet, who might just use your final moments before being banned as video proof that cheaters don't prosper in the fantasy world of Tyria.
Game security lead Chris Cleary posted a link to a video this week showing the public humiliation that awaits cheaters. It appears in a Guild Wars 2 forum thread that began by calling out the offender, aptly named J T Darkside. Several posts later, another player offered video evidence, writing "he is still cheating every night. tired of this, we filmed him."
The conversation turned against the developer, as players wondered if, when and how ArenaNet would do anything about cheaters.
Not long after that, Cleary joined the conversation. He explained how the massively multiplayer online role-playing game's creator finds evidence of wrongdoing before offering proof of action.
"We don’t need to see it in-game, sometimes good video evidence is enough for me to track down who it was," Cleary wrote. "In this case, the video was enough for me to find out who it was and take action. Thanks for the video, and to accompany your video, I give you this video of his account’s last moments …
"Oh yah, he’s also banned."
Press play below to see a video of the cheater's final moments in Guild Wars 2, in which Cleary takes over the account, strips off all of the character's clothes, leaps to his death and then deletes Darkside's characters.
