Splatoon, Nintendo's upcoming multiplayer shooter for Wii U, will have free updates, a free trial before it's released and a built-in minigame that looks like it was created for the NES, according to a Splatoon-focused Nintendo Direct event today.
Throughout the summer, Nintendo will release new stages, weapons, gear and battle modes. In August, a Splatoon update will bring four-person online teams in Turf War mode, four-versus-four custom battles on any stage with any rules, as well as a new battle mode and gear. Press play below to watch a few minutes of the presentation that reveals the new features.
Splatoon will also include an 8-bit-styled game called Squid Jump, designed to pass the time while players wait in matchmaking queues. You can check it out in the video below.
Nintendo also announced a series of free trails to be held before Splatoon's release. Wii U owners can now download a demo from the eShop, which unlocks access to hourlong, four-on-four Turf War battles. Those will be held from 11 p.m. - 12 a.m. ET on Friday, May 8, as well as Saturday, May 9, at both 7-8 a.m. ET and 3-4 p.m. ET. Press play below to see Nintendo's overview of the Global Testfire events.
Splatoon is set for a May 29 release. For a deeper look at the game, check out the video below to watch Polygon play through its single-player component.
