Who's in Captain America: Civil War? Just about every Avenger

Michael McWhertor is a journalist with more than 17 years of experience covering video games, technology, movies, TV, and entertainment.

Captain America's next solo movie, Captain America: Civil War, is going to be crowded with Avengers, Marvel said today in announcing the film's cast and production. Practically every major superhero who showed up in Avengers: Age of Ultron will also appear in Cap's next film.

The primary cast includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Paul Bettany as Vision, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch.

There's no Thor or Hulk, two characters who have good reasons for not showing up, but that's a lot of Avengers.

There's more. Paul Rudd will reprise his role as Ant-Man in Captain America: Civil War, and Chadwick Boseman will show up as Black Panther. The cast also includes Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, Daniel Brühl in an unnamed role (he's reportedly playing Baron Zemo) and Frank Grillo as Crossbones. William Hurt will return to the role of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, which he played in 2008's The Incredible Hulk.

Martin Freeman is also on the cast, though Marvel is being cagey about who he's playing.

Here's Marvel's official synopsis for the new Captain America movie.

"Captain America: Civil War" picks up where "Avengers: Age of Ultron" left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Captain America: Civil War will hit theaters on May 6, 2016. Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo will return to helm the film.
