Nintendo is considering using Android to power its NX "dedicated gaming system," according to a rumor report in Japanese newspaper Nikkei.
The company is considering using the operating system as a way to attract more third-party developers, according to a translation by Serkan Toto, the CEO of Tokyo-based game industry consultancy Kantan Games.
The insider told Nikkei that it would also mean that development could be expanded to smartphones, tablets, and other devices, according to a translation by Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft.
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has said that the NX won't be discussed in detail until 2016 and that he only mentioned its development to point out that the company wasn't moving solely into smartphone games.
We also know the mystery gaming system may not be region free and that it seems to be driven in part by a desire to connect all of Nintendo's platforms through a single membership service.
