Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games brings the duo to soccer, rugby, golf and more

Mario and Sonic are heading to Rio de Janeiro for Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Nintendo announced during a Nintendo Direct Micro presentation today.

The '90s-rivals-turned-2010s-best-buds will be joined by friends such as Donkey Kong, Dr. Robotnik, Miles "Tails" Prower and Luigi. They'll compete in Olympic sports such as soccer (or football), rhythmic gymnastics, table tennis and the 100-meter dash.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be available on both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, with some sports being exclusive to the respective versions. Wii U players will be able to partake in rugby sevens, which is making its Olympic debut in Rio. The 3DS version will feature golf, which is returning to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years.

The 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in August 2016. Nintendo did not announce a release window today for Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. You can see footage of the title in an excerpt from today's Nintendo Direct Micro above.
