Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 on the way, with Neymar as its cover star

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Neymar, the Brazilian footballer whose Barcelona side just won its second treble in the past six years, stars on the front of Pro Evolution Soccer 2016, publisher Konami announced today.

It's a particularly timely development for Konami, which exclusively controls the license to the UEFA Champions League that Barça just won. Neymar, 23, and teammates also took home La Liga's championship and el Copa del Rey, Spain's club football tournament.

Pre-orders of Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 will be given Neymar as a special player reward in myClub, the game's ultimate-team management and collection game mode. Platforms were not specified in a news release for the game. Last year's game launched on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Mario Götze fronted Pro Evolution Soccer 2015. Cristiano Ronaldo had starred on the cover for Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 and 2013. The game had no cover star for its 2014 edition.

This is the first news of PES 2016. Konami went through a rough May in which the cancellation of Silent Hills and statements about mobile gaming led enough fans to question Konami's future in console gaming that the publisher apologized to them.

Konami promises more information on Pro Evolution Soccer 2016, the 15th edition of the game under that name, on Friday. For now, here's a teaser video courtesy of Operation Sports.
