Ratchet & Clank for PS4 looks amazing

Insomniac Games revealed its re-imagining of the original Ratchet & Clank for PlayStation 4 in a new gameplay video today and it is — unsurprisingly — the best looking game in the series. But it's also probably much prettier than you were expecting.

Ratchet & Clank for PS4 will tie into the animated film of the same name that will hit theaters next year. On the PlayStation Blog, Insomniac community lead James Stevenson explains how that influenced the design of the game.

"We knew early on that we didn't want to just up-res Ratchet & Clank for PS2," Stevenson said. "We started out thinking of Ratchet & Clank on PS4 as a 're-imagining' of the 2002 original, revised to tie in with the deeper version of Ratchet's origin story (as seen in the film). We envisioned a curated Ratchet & Clank experience that borrowed from the spirit of the classic PS2 games while infusing some of the best elements from the Ratchet & Clank Future games.

"We ended up with a new game, with elements based on the original — but now with modern controls, several new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new Clank gameplay, all new boss fights, new flight sequences, and more... all constructed to take advantage of the graphical prowess of PS4."

Stevenson says that "the majority" of Ratchet's arsenal in the re-imagining will consist of weapons that weren't in the original Ratchet & Clank. Instead, the game will include new weapons and favorites lifted from the Future series, some of which you can see in the trailer above.

Ratchet & Clank for PS4 will be released spring 2016. For more on the game, read Polygon's preview and interview with Insomniac Games.
