Harry Potter-based Fantastic Beasts trilogy adds Boardwalk Empire veteran

Susana Polo is an entertainment editor at Polygon, specializing in pop culture and genre fare, with a primary expertise in comic books. Previously, she founded The Mary Sue.

Katherine Waterston has joined the cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first installment of a new movie franchise set in the world of Harry Potter, written by J.K. Rowling herself.

The British actress, whose resume includes roles in Inherent Vice, Boardwalk Empire, and Robot & Frank, will play the role of Tina (short for Porpentina) "a witch who operates in the U.S." She'll join costar Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything, Jupiter Ascending) in the role of the series lead, Newt Scamander.

Fantastic Beasts is set in New York in the Roaring Twenties, a entirely new setting for the Harry Potter universe. With their focus in England, the books and their film adaptations have shared few details on how wizards live in the United States. Not much is known about the plot of Fantastic Beasts, other than that it focuses on the career of Newt Scamander, the wizarding world's foremost researcher of magical animals.
