Nintendo's upcoming gaming system, codenamed NX, will not be powered by Android, a Nintendo spokesperson tells the Wall Street Journal.
"There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX," a Nintendo spokesman said, according to the report.
Earlier this week, Japanese business daily Nikkei, citing a source, reported that Nintendo was considering using the operating system as a way to attract more third-party developers.
The insider told Nikkei that it would also mean that development could be expanded to smartphones, tablets, and other devices, according to a translation by Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft.
Nikkei does have a long history of getting its reports correct, and Nintendo has a history of denying those reports early on despite them being accurate.
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has said that the NX won't be discussed in detail until 2016 and that he only mentioned its development to point out that the company wasn't moving solely into smartphone games.
We also know the mystery gaming system may not be region locked and that it seems to be driven in part by a desire to connect all of Nintendo's platforms through a single membership service.
