PlanetSide 2 hits PS4 June 23

The PlayStation 4 version of PlanetSide 2, the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter from Daybreak Game Company, launches June 23, the studio announced today.

It's been a long road to get to this point. Daybreak was formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, and that studio originally announced shortly before E3 2013 that it planned to launch PlanetSide 2 on PS4 that year. Sony then delayed the game to early 2014, but its closed beta didn't go live until January 2015.

"We're excited to finally bring the game to PS4 so the console gaming community can experience what truly massive warfare is all about," said Andy Sites, director of development on PlanetSide 2, in a PlayStation Blog post.

PlanetSide 2 debuted on Windows PC back in November 2012. Some features are currently exclusive to the PS4 version, such as a new map called Koltyr. The game is free-to-play on both PC and PS4, meaning that a PlayStation Plus subscription isn't required for the PS4 version.

Daybreak's Sites said that PlanetSide 2 players can expect frequent updates after launch, including new items on the in-game marketplace, additional features and holiday events. The studio will also offer a $14.99 per month subscription for those interested in "an enhanced PlanetSide 2 experience," according to a press release. The membership provides subscribers with increased experience, cert and resource gains; marketplace discounts; a monthly drop of Battle Cash; and access to a monthly double XP event.
