Play a Minecraft-ized version of Splatoon with this map

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Hey, you got your Splatoon in my Minecraft! No, you got your Minecraft in my Splatoon! However you want to look at it, this map recreates the multiplayer of the Wii U's latest game within the vanilla version of Minecraft.

The map is the work of SethBling (whose Minecraft tinkerings include a mechanical bull) and its multiplayer works on any 1.8 server. The video above shows all how teams of human players choose sides and three of Splatoon's main weapons — Splattershot, Splat Charger and the Splat Roller — and then get down to painting the landscape for three minutes. You can even turn into a squid, it's how you reload ammo and scale walls. One major difference, Splatoon is a third-person shooter, where this is played first-person.

SethBling points out "I don't have access to a Wii U," and so the map is not "100 percent accurate to the game," yet he still pulls off the fundamentals. He credits the help and advice of friend PyroPuncher, playing along in the video above. While the map is designed for 4-on-4 play, it supports "any team sizes."

The map may be downloaded from SethBling's site here. For more on Splatoon, which we said "has the same simple, clever design of Nintendo's best games," see Polygon's review.
