Here's what Pokémon battles in Minecraft look like

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

As if recreating Splatoon in Minecraft (which we saw yesterday) wasn't enough, here's an even more elaborate project, termed Pokémon Cobalt and Amethyst, that aims to bring all of the gameplay of the Pokémon series into a single world playable within an un-modded version of Minecraft. Yesterday, it got the game's battle system working.

You may see it in action in that video above. The creators, Phoenix Projects, aren't offering the world for download yet, and say it does show some bugs and flaws, but this work-in-progress demonstration shows a lot of work and progress toward their goal.

It's not just a map, it's a full fledged turn-based battle system, as one commenter in this Reddit thread points out. For its part, Phoenix Projects says the map's final goals include "most, if not, all of Pokémon's features ... including and not limited to Pokémon, attack moves, stats, animations, cutscenes and enemy encounters."

The project began in December 2014 and the creators hope to have the full version finished in early-to-mid 2016. You may track its progress in this thread on the Minecraft forum.
