Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice coming to Nintendo 3DS this fall

Sega will release a new Sonic the Hedgehog game, Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, for Nintendo 3DS this holiday season, the publisher announced today. The sequel to last year's portable Sonic game, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, will introduce new fire and ice elements to the game, and a new playable character.

Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Sticks will return for a new portable outing on 3DS, and this time they'll be joined by another hedgehog, Amy Rose. She'll be the fifth playable character in Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice. The quintet will face Sonic's longtime nemesis, Dr. Eggman, and a new foe named D-Fekt.

Sega and developer Sanzaru Games — they made last year's Shattered Crystal too — promise something for Sonic fans who like speed and fans who prefer slower exploration. They're also introducing a new multiplayer gameplay mode, Bot Racing, that is "purely about racing and speed," where players can unlock Bots "to challenge friends on fast courses or tracks."

You can see some of Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice's gameplay in action in the debut trailer above.
