MTV fantasy The Shannara Chronicles gets a lush, magical trailer

Following a first image reveal earlier this week, MTV today dropped a video preview of its planned fantasy series The Shannara Chronicles.

Due to be screened in January, it's based on Terry Brook's Lord of the Rings-inspired series of novels, first published in 1977. The fantasy story takes place 2,000 years after a nuclear holocaust, which led to the mutation of humanity into beings named after myths: trolls, gnomes and dwarfs. The nuclear devastation also led to the loss of technology, rediscovery of magic and reemergence of elves.

MTV's trailer shows a lush, magical world including some remnants of the pre-holocaust civilization. It follows the story of three young adults on a quest.

The Shannara Chronicles — filmed on location in New Zealand — stars Poppy Drayton (Downton Abbey), Austin Butler (Switched at Birth), Manu Bennett (Arrow) and John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings).
