Troy Baker's audition for Far Cry 4 got ... creepy

New, comments

Ubisoft had some idea of what it wanted to do with Far Cry 4's villain, Pagan Min, but voice actor Troy Baker helped guide the character into the charismatic psychopath we know today. During an Indy PopCon 2015 panel, Baker revealed that during his audition for the role, he busted into some murderous improv.

The conversation in question begins at the 21:45 mark, where Baker talks about Ubisoft offering him the freedom to audition for the role by doing "whatever you want to do."

"'You have free reign to do whatever you want to do,'" Baker said the team told him. "'We have an idea of what the character is, but we want to see what you come up with. One thing: We don't want the Joker.'"

Baker said that though there was a script and lines to read, that went "bye-bye very, very quickly." Half-way through the scene, an assistant walked in to check that there was enough coffee and water in the audition room.

"And I just remember I was talking like this, and all of the sudden she walks in," Baker recalled. "I said, 'I'm sorry, who is this? Who is this walking into this room right now? No, no, no, no, don't leave. Sit down.'"

The assistant was understandably puzzled.

"I was like 'Have a seat, please. Make yourself comfortable. Would you like some coffee that you brought in? It looks very delicious. Now, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to murder her right in front of you.'

"And she just starts going 'I don't know -' and meanwhile the team's going this is it."

Baker credits his previous work and reputation as a big part of why he was able to get away with being so free. Perhaps that explains why the team didn't bat an eye when, still in character, Baker told the assistant "I'm going to peel your face off and put it on my own. It'll be the most glorious makeover I've ever had."

You can watch the full panel above, which includes Baker reflecting on his past work, talking about what he'd like to see in a sequel to The Last of Us and his role in Uncharted 4.
