FIFA 16 will feature women soccer stars Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair on the respective covers of the U.S. and Canadian editions, publisher EA Sports announced today.
Forward Morgan helped the U.S. team to victory in this summer's Women's World Cup, playing in all seven games during the competition. Sinclair is captain of host nation Canada, which reached the last eight. The covers will also feature Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi.
The Australian FIFA 16 cover will feature Steph Catley who was voted in by the public, chosen from a list of women players.
FIFA 16 is the first in the series to feature women players, with 12 international teams available to play. It's also the first to feature women cover stars. FIFA 16's covers in Europe, Japan, Mexico and South America will feature various local stars of the men's game.
Following the U.S. team's World Cup victory, speculation mounted that EA Sports would announce a woman player on the cover of its U.S. edition. Polygon understands that the decision to go with Morgan and Sinclair was made prior to the World Cup.
"It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of EA Sports' FIFA," said Morgan in a press statement. "I know people all over the world play this game and I'm really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women's soccer. And now to share the cover with today's greatest player is surreal."
FIFA 16 will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on Sept. 22.
