The Grand Tournament is the name of the next expansion for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Blizzard revealed today at an event in San Francisco. Featuring more than 100 new cards, The Grand Tournament is scheduled to launch in August.
As previously rumored, The Grand Tournament will be based on the Argent Tournament update from World of Warcraft. This provides Hearthstone with the context for an expansion based around mounts and jousting.
Of course, Blizzard promises that its interpretation of the Argent Tournament will be more fun and light-hearted than the World of Warcraft version.
During the event, Blizzard revealed a new play board for the expansion that will have plenty of fun interactions.
New cards include Skycap'n Kragg, a legendary charge card that costs one less for each friendly pirate minion in play. Maiden of the Lake is a new minion that will lower the cost of your hero power to one mana crystal. Meanwhile, the Coldarra Drake will allow players to use their hero power as many times per turn as they can afford.
Blizzard also revealed a new giant, the Frost Giant, which costs 10 mana to begin with but will cost one less for each time a hero power has been used during the game.
Minions can now carry a new keyword called "inspire." A card with inspire will have a special ability that is only activated by using a hero power. As an example, the Lowly Squire is a one attack minion whose attack increases by one every time you use your hero power while it's out.
Hunters will be getting a new spell called Lock and Load that adds a random hunter card to your hand each time you play a spell that turn alongside of it.
Blizzard says there will be 130 new cards included in The Grand Tournament. The developer will be opening up the expansion for pre-purchase next week, which will allow players to get packs at a discounted rate as well as gain access to a new card back. The expansion will officially launch next month.
Hearthstone was released last year, and has had a steady stream of major updates and new content since then. Its first full expansion, Goblins vs. Gnomes, was released last December, while a recent free update added the new Tavern Brawl mode into the game.
