Rocket League gets spectator mode and map, plus first paid DLC, in 'early August' (update)

Rocket League developer Psyonix will release the game's first paid add-on, Supersonic Fury, in "early August," the studio announced today.

Supersonic Fury will add two new Battle-Cars to Rocket League: Dominus, an "over-the-top American muscle car," and Takumi, a "souped-up Japanese street racer." Six different customization decals will be available for each car, and both vehicles will be playable only in the Supersonic Fury downloadable content pack.

In addition to the cars themselves, Supersonic Fury will introduce the following items:

...two all-new Rocket Boosts ("Nitrous" and "Burnout"), two new Wheel sets (the soccer ball-themed "Cristiano" and the very-cool "Spinner" set), five all-new Paint Types ("Brushed Metal," "Carbon Fiber," "Metallic Pearl," "Pearlescent," and "Wood"), and a handful of new Trophies.Supersonic Fury will cost $3.99.

Psyonix is also working on a free content update for Rocket League that will deliver the game's first new map, Utopia Coliseum (screenshot below), along with a spectator mode and over 70 new country flags. The studio is planning to include other features as well, such as updated goal explosions and demolitions, and a new song: Hollywood Principle's "Firework."

"It is our sincere hope that this mix of paid DLC and free add-on content is what Rocket League fans have been waiting for, and it's just the beginning of what is plenty more to come," said Jeremy Dunham, vice president of marketing at Psyonix, in a PlayStation Blog post today. Last week, the studio walked back comments regarding "aggressive" DLC plans for Rocket League after some players became concerned.

The PlayStation 4 version of Rocket League is still available free to PlayStation Plus subscribers until Aug. 4. Psyonix also released the game on Windows PC earlier this month alongside PS4. The studio has yet to provide a release window for Supersonic Fury on PC; we've reached out for more details, and will update this article with any information we receive.

Rocket League was released just over three weeks ago, and Psyonix announced yesterday that more than 5 million people have downloaded the game — a figure that includes PC and PS4 purchases as well as PlayStation Plus downloads. Update: A Psyonix representative told Polygon that the Supersonic Fury DLC and the free content update will be released "simultaneously" on PC and PS4.
