Daredevil adds G.I. Joe: Retaliation's Elodie Yung as Elektra

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 15 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

Daredevil, the Netflix series based on the Marvel Comics character, will bring in Elodie Yung as Elektra in its second season, Marvel announced today.

Elektra is "a mysterious woman from Matt Murdock's past whose dangerous and exotic ways may be more than he can handle," according to Marvel. Yung, who previously appeared in G.I. Joe: Retaliation and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, joins the Daredevil cast alongside John Bernthal; Marvel announced last month that he will play Frank Castle, aka The Punisher.

"After a worldwide search, we found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra's impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity," said Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television and an executive producer on Daredevil, in a statement from Marvel. "Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for."

Yung, 34, is of French-Cambodian descent. Elektra, as created by Frank Miller, is Greek; that was the character background Marvel went with in the 2003 film Daredevil and its 2005 spinoff, Elektra, both of which starred Jennifer Garner as the female ninja.

The second season of Daredevil will premiere on Netflix in 2016.
