Sega is bringing its free-to-play RPG Phantasy Star Online 2 to PlayStation 4, the company announced at an event in Japan this weekend. According to a report from 4Gamer, the PS4 release will hit sometime in 2016.
Next year will also see the addition of a new episode for Phantasy Star Online 2 called Reborn: Episode 4.
It's not clear whether Sega intends to bring the PS4 version outside of Japan. Phantasy Star Online 2 was once planned for release on Windows PC in North America — and playable at events in 2012 — but that version of the game has been delayed indefinitely. We've asked Sega what its plans for Phantasy Star Online 2 for PS4 in North America are in the wake of the Japanese announcement.
Phantasy Star Online 2 was released for Windows PC in 2012. A PlayStation Vita version was released the following year. Currently, the game is exclusive to Japan and Southeast Asia.
Update: A representative for Sega offered the following statement to Polygon: "SEGA is currently not planning to release the PS4 version of Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan"
