Artist Drew Struzan has worked on posters for each of the Star Wars films, as well as iconic posters for the Indiana Jones films. His design for The Force Awakens' poster was recently shown during Disney's D23 celebration, and the fact it showed one of the film's lead characters with a lightsaber made waves.
He's also one of the few people outside of Disney to have seen a good amount of the film.
"I’ve never worked with J.J [Abrams] before and so we started working on it and he showed me like half the movie and it was just … a wonderful film and I know it’s going to be grand," Struzan told Movie Weekly. "I got to read the script and subsequently I’ve seen half of it and I can tell you and the fans this, Honest to God, it is far and away probably going to be THE BEST Star Wars you’ve ever seen."
The rest of the interview has more details about how the poster was designed and Struzan's impressive career, but he's careful to note that this isn't a "return" to the series for him. He never went away.
"Because I did comic book covers, I did a couple dozen book covers, you know?" he said. "I was kept busy doing Star Wars since 1977, it was never far away from me."
He lists Star Wars among the most popular things he's done in his career, although he seems frustrated by the limitations of that word in the interview.
"It was so touching to the whole world," he said. "About adventure, growing up, learning and sharing with friends. It was in the movie and it did that for society and I wish there were more things in the world that brought us together in peace, harmony and friendship. It was a wonderful experience."
