To many, it feels like we haven't heard much from Avalanche Studios since they released the critically acclaimed Just Cause 2 back in 2010. Aside from a handful of downloadable games (including the fantastic Renegade Ops), it's true: it's been five years since the studio's last big-budget AAA title.
Next month, that drought ends with the release of Mad Max, their open world take on the long-running cinematic franchise. Above, watch more than 70 minutes of gameplay from our time checking out Mad Max earlier this week, accompanied by an interview with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's Daniel McGuffey on how the game splits its time between driving and melee combat, the opportunities for emergent gameplay in an open world this large and how the game sticks to Avalanche's chaotic roots.
Mad Max will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows and Linux on Sept. 1.
