Watch us tour Star Citizen's new social module live, and dogfight in Arena Commander

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

Over the weekend Star Citizen released its latest update, featuring a long-awaited glimpse at the game's social features. I've been able to find a gap in today's intermittent server instability, and I wanted to give you and Dave Tach a tour of the latest iteration of the universe Chris Roberts has been trying to show you for years now.

This is very early alpha, as the Star Citizen team explained not long ago on their blog. It lacks some of the expected nuance that was to be included with the now delayed Star Marine FPS module. It includes a look at ArcCorp's Area 18, a planet dominated by a single corporation in the Star Citizen universe.

We're using a fairly beefy gaming PC (featuring an Intel i5-3570k and an Nvidia GTX 970 with 8 gigabytes of RAM) but the game will stutter at times. We'll move slowly, with an eye toward giving you a lay of the land. If we're lucky, we'll even see about doing some dogfighting in Arena Commander when we're done with our walk.

We'll be streaming live on our YouTube channel for about an hour, starting at 4:45 p.m. ET. The full video will be archived here when we're through.
