Listen to Chris Farley's original take on Shrek in this leaked 1997 video

Susana Polo is an entertainment editor at Polygon, specializing in pop culture and genre fare, with a primary expertise in comic books. Previously, she founded The Mary Sue.

In the alternate universe where Chris Farley did not tragically die young, he would have voiced the lovable ogre Shrek, and this leaked audio reel — complete with accompanying storyboards — gives us a listen at what that would have been like.

Farley died just before completing a first dialogue pass for Shrek, with five to 10 percent of the recording work left to go, reportedly. You can read an account of how Farley's death affected production and the folks who worked with him here, eventually resulting in the hiring of Mike Meyers and a full script rewrite for the film.

Farley's version of Shrek was less abrasive, younger and somewhat more idealistic than Meyers wound up being, complete with dreams of becoming a knight some day. He's also not Scottish.
