Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain has a little P.T. in it

Michael McWhertor is a journalist with more than 17 years of experience covering video games, technology, movies, TV, and entertainment.

Kojima Productions managed to work a little bit of P.T. — the developer's playable teaser for its scrapped Silent Hill game — into Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. We've known that since last year's Tokyo Game Show, when Kojima Productions showed off a cameo of P.T.'s Lisa in The Phantom Pain. She appeared as an "active decoy" balloon, which is designed to distract enemy soldiers.

But there's a little more P.T. in The Phantom Pain, as we discovered in our playthrough of the game.

In one of The Phantom Pain's missions set in Africa, we happened upon a radio with an intriguing transmission: the same crime report that's broadcast in the hallway radio in P.T. That would theoretically set the events of P.T. around 1984, when The Phantom Pain takes place. Or perhaps someone in the Angola-Zaire border region is merely an enthusiast of gun violence reporting from North America and enjoys listening to that horrific story of infanticide on loop.
