Need For Speed taking closed beta signups — consoles only — until Sept. 25

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

The Need for Speed reboot is taking signups for a closed beta that will run sometime after Sept. 25 and before the game's expected launch in November.

Registration ends Sept. 25, and the beta is not being offered on Windows PC — only Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Though the sign-up site is localized to the UK, the terms and conditions of signing up indicate the closed beta will be available in the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe. The game is being developed by Ghost Games' UK studio.

An EA/Origin account linked to a PlayStation or Xbox account is needed to participate.

After the series skipped 2014 — the first year in which there was not a new Need for Speed game since 2002 —Electronic Arts announced at E3 2015 that Need For Speed will launch on Nov. 3.
