NBA 2K16's latest trailer looks like a true Spike Lee joint

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

NBA 2K's "My Player" mode, introduced six years ago, has long been the most daring of the sports video games offering role-playing or cinematic experiences in their career suites. What it's doing for NBA 2K16 appears to push the envelope even by the standards the series has set for itself.

Spike Lee, of course, is directing this feature and it's promising to be a joint just like his other productions. That means more than just a rivalry with a mouthy guy drafted in the same round as you (NBA 2K14), or an in-over-his-head agent providing comedy relief (NBA 2K15). This is going to be a story with characters, conflicts, resolutions, a beginning, middle and end.

So, introduce yourselves to Frequency Vibrations, the main star of "Livin' Da Dream." It sounds like he has some people in his past he needs to — and can't — shake off as he makes it big in the NBA. NBA 2K16 launches on Sept. 29 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
