Sony dropping PlayStation 4 price in Japan

The PlayStation 4 is getting a price drop in Japan, Sony announced today. Sony will slash the PS4's price from ¥39,980 down to ¥34,980, a difference of about $41.

The price drop goes into effect on Oct. 1 in Japan.

Atsushi Morita, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia, said Sony hopes the price cut will "provide an opportunity for users who have not yet been exposed to this device to dive into the world of PlayStation 4."

Sony announced earlier this year it had sold more than 20 million PS4 consoles since the system's launch in 2013. More than 1.4 million of those have been in Japan.
