Try Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War series free on Steam this weekend

Starting today, the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War franchise is the centerpiece of a weekend Steam sale.

From now through Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. PDT, real-time strategy fans can check out the complete versions of both Dawn of War and Dawn of War 2 for free. Not only are the base games available to try out, but the complete sets of expansions for both are included as well.

People interested in buying any of the Dawn of War series' games or add-ons can get a 75 percent discount from now until Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. PDT.

As a bonus, developer Relic Entertainment added something new to each game: The first Dawn of War received a new multiplayer map, Temple of Cyrene, while players of the sequel get four special gear items previously available only as a pre-order bonus or rare loot drop.

Last year, following the shutdown of its server host GameSpy Technology, Relic moved the Dawn of War games to Steam in order to preserve its multiplayer servers.

The long-running Warhammer series features a number of titles. These range from an adaptation of tabletop game Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, announced in January, to mech action game Freeblade, which made an appearance at the Apple event earlier this month. The first game to be demonstrated on the just-released iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, Freeblade will launch later this holiday season.
