Three years of add-on support planned for Lego Dimensions

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Lego Dimensions, which launched today for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, will be supported by three years' worth of additional levels and characters, a producer said this weekend at EGX 2015.

To Eurogamer, Mark Warburton of developer TT Games said add-ons will be supported until at least 2018 "and we've got no intention of stopping there."

Lego Dimensions hits the highly competitive toys-to-life genre, going against Nintendo's stable of amiibo, Skylanders' established footprint and Disney Infinity's enormous universe of characters. Lego counters with a wide ranging cast of characters that span Scooby-Doo to Batman and Jurassic Park

"We've created the toy pad so that it shouldn't need to be updated," Warburton told Eurogamer, "and we can just create new level and character packs to keep expanding that."

The Lego Dimensions starter pack includes three figurines, Batman, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, and Wyldstyle from The Lego Movie. The first wave of add-ons also launched today, involving The Simpsons, Back to the Future and more. Three more waves are planned for launches in November, January and March.
