Xbox One ups party chat invites to 12 in new update

new update for the Xbox One, available now, increases the limit on players allowed in party chat from eight to 12.

Fan feedback indicated strong interest in raising the number of party chat participants. Xbox Live's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb, who announced the news on his blog, linked to a 2014 thread urging the company to change the maximum number from eight. The expansion is a direct, if belated, response to this popular fan request.

The update coincides with the recent rollout of the revamped Xbox One user interface. All Xbox owners are privy to 12-person party chat, but only members of the preview program currently have access to the updated dashboard.

In addition to the console-wide party chat change, today sees the release of a handful of new features for the dashboard preview program. This includes a new text chat option for party communication, which previously only allowed for voice chat.

The full dashboard update will be broadly available later this fall, with Microsoft eyeing a November launch. Backward compatibility will accompany the new UI, as well.
