Game not included

Nintendo will release a special edition, Fire Emblem Fates-themed version of its New Nintendo 3DS XL hardware when the role-playing game launches in North America on Feb. 19. The hardware will feature artwork inspired by the game and will cost $199.99.

The game itself won't be included as part of the package, however. Fire Emblem Fates will be sold separately in a pair of releases — Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest — for $39.99 each. Each version will have its own version of the storyline, and players can purchase the other version of the game as a separate download for $19.99. A third story, Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation, can also be purchased for $19.99 when it's released on March 10.

Players can also purchase the whole package, which includes all three versions, in a special edition that retails for $79.99.

Nintendo of America also detailed Fire Emblem Fates' downloadable content release plan today. The publisher plans to release new maps "on a regular basis," starting on Feb. 19. Players can purchase new DLC maps individually or as part of a map pack that costs $17.99 and contains 11 maps.

Fire Emblem Fates and its New Nintendo 3DS XL hardware arrive stateside Feb. 19.
