The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is now free on Xbox, backwards compatible

Get it while it's hot!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was one of the best games of 2015 — although it didn't quite make our top ten list in a very busy year — and now you can take a step back and play the second Witcher title on your Xbox One due to the game being added to the backwards compatibility list.

It's also free so, you know. You don't have any excuse other than a lack of time.

Witcher 2 free

Don't expect an experience quite as good as the latest game in the series, however. "All of these things contributed to a sense of fatigue. The visual splendor and novelty wore off and couldn't mask The Witcher 2's shakier moments of execution," Polygon wrote in its review.

"From a design perspective, The Witcher 2 lost much of its momentum after a very confident first half, and it felt like CD Projekt Red were trying to pad out sections where they had bitten off more than they could chew. The Witcher 2 bends under the weight of its own ambition, and the world that it depicts is left to hold things up," the review continued.

Still, it's free!
