Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) will direct NickToons, based on the popular cartoons, a representative of production company Paramount Pictures confirmed to Polygon.
His frequent collaborator Jerusha Hess will co-write the project, which is now in development. NickToons will feature characters from several classic ‘90s Nickelodeon shows, such as Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy.
It will be a Nickelodeon-style take on the cartoon and live-action-blending film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Paramount said, although details on the story remain scarce.
"The project comes at a time when there is renewed interest in Nickelodeon's library of characters from the last 25 years," the Paramount rep told us.
A nostalgia-filled project of this nature has been rumored since last fall, when the cable channel announced plans to bring back its popular characters to television. Right now, its TeenNick network hosts a ‘90s Nickelodeon-themed programming block on weeknights. A new film based on the Hey Arnold! cartoon is also in the works.
