Report: Girls to end after its sixth season (update)

Update: Creator Lena Dunham confirmed the news in a press release Wednesday afternoon. Dunham said that she felt now was the right time to wrap up the series, and thanked HBO for the unwavering support over the years. The original story is below.

HBO's award-winning series Girls will reportedly come to an end after its sixth season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources confirmed that the Lena Dunham-starring comedy about four friends navigating life in New York City would finally end in 2017.

The show is currently about to head into its fifth season, and has yet to be renewed for a sixth season at this time.

Considering the fanbase around it, however, and the accolades it receives every year, it's almost guaranteed the show's renewal will be announced before its upcoming season ends.

HBO has yet to comment on the reports.
