Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally done it, according to The Hollywood Reporter: The film is now the highest-grossing movie ever in America. It took just 20 days for the film to trounce Avatar, which sits at number two with a cool $760.5 million.
While official numbers aren't out yet, The Hollywood Reporter notes that after yesterday's $8 million intake, The Force Awakens is only $2 million shy of Avatar's record. Industry analysts are expecting the film to officially take the top slot by the end of the day, with an updated total likely being posted tomorrow.
The Force Awakens has set a whole bunch of records, and just yesterday entered the top five biggest movies worldwide. The film has yet to open in China, which is the world's second largest market for filmgoers. It also still has a ways to go in terms of beating Avatar's $2.78 billion global gross, and analysts aren't sure it will be able to overtake James Cameron's 3D epic on that front.
Update: We have a number. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made $764.4 million as of Jan. 6, according to Pro.BoxOffice.com.
