This past weekend, Lionsgate screened the first official trailer for John Wick: Chapter 2, the sequel to its popular “gun-fu” movie from 2014. Now, in a new interview with Collider, director Chad Stahelski said the team is already hard at work on the third installment in the franchise.
Stahelski said that while they were in the early stages of figuring out where to bring Wick and the rest of his assassin community next, the studio has already given them the greenlight on the project. It’s safe to assume that Wick will make it through to the next film, but Stahelski mentioned a couple of other characters that will also survive the sequel.
“Winston’s [actor Ian McShane] is a big part of the next one, so is Lance Reddick,” Stahelski told Collider. “We’ve got some ideas.”
It shouldn’t be too surprising that those two will make it through the sequel, due out early next year. McShane plays Winston, the owner of the hotel that Wick stayed at in the first film, while Reddick plays the hotel’s manager. For the most part, they’ve been in the background of the film and haven’t gotten much of a chance to get in on the action in the same way lead actor Keanu Reeves has. During the panel, McShane managed to get a quip in about that exact topic, joking that he’s been “too busy running the hotel.”
During their panel, the cast of John Wick: Chapter 2 detailed some of the action that fans can expect to see in the sequel, while also introducing new characters that are joining the franchise for the first time.
John Wick: Chapter 2 hits theaters Feb. 10, 2017.
