Yesterday, director Gareth Edwards revealed the newest Rogue One: A Star Wars Story poster on The Star Wars Show and announced that a new trailer would premiere today. This morning, the team at Good Morning America debuted the new trailer on their show. It can be seen above.
The trailer begins with a young Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) talking to her father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) and watching as he's confronted by members of the Empire. Galen Erso is a renowned scientist and because of his wealth of knowledge, is a wanted man by both the Rebels and the Empire. Mikkelsen revealed earlier this year that he would be seen most often in Jyn Erso's flashbacks.
Jyn learns just how powerful and crucial her father is to both the Empire and the Rebels after being recruited by the latter. Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) informs Jyn that her father is being used by the Empire to build a "super weapon," otherwise known as the Death Star.
The trailer also focuses on the imbalance of power between the Empire and the Rebels. While the Empire has "immeasurable power" at their hands with the Death Star, according to Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), the Rebellion is sorely lacking in any kind of equivalent weapon to take on the opposing army.
Other important characters like Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) also make appearances in the trailer.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters Dec. 16.
