It seems like fans have been asking about the possibility of a stand-alone Black Widow movie since the character made her first appearance in Iron Man 2. In May, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the studio was committing to making that stand-alone project a reality, but Marvel has yet to make an official announcement.
In an interview with Variety, Scarlett Johansson — who has played the character previously in five other films — said that conversations with Marvel about the Black Widow movie are still definitely ongoing. If it were to happen, she added, it would have to be “totally different” than other stand-alone titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“There are so many ways you can go,” Johansson said when asked if it would be a prequel. “I think it would just have to be very much like its own specific thing. It would have to have its own specific vibe. It would have been totally different than any of the other standalone films.”
Johansson said that while she’s excited about the possibility of having her own movie in the Marvel universe, it would have to happen under the right circumstances. The actress added that there was a lot of opportunity to mine the character’s backstory and focus on how she became the agent that audiences know her as today, but Marvel could also focus on where Black Widow is right now within the Cinematic Universe.
She did add, however, that if Marvel was committed to bringing Black Widow to the big screen in her own film, it would have to be relatively soon. Johansson said that she would want to do it while she still felt comfortable wearing the skintight suit that her character is known for and she didn’t know how much longer she would be able to do that.
When Feige talked about the possibility of giving Black Widow her own stand-alone movie, he added that he thought it could be a great chance to give the character her own franchise. Johansson didn’t mention if she would be interested in doing more than one movie, but from the sounds of it, she may not be up for doing two or three movies over the course of the next four or five years.
While there’s still no official word from Marvel on whether the Black Widow movie will happen, fans can catch the character next in Avengers: Infinity War. That hits theaters April 25, 2018.
