Uncharted movie gets a new director

Second time’s the charm?

Nathan Drake hangs on to a plane cargo strap for his dear life in a promo shot from Uncharted Naughty Dog/Sony Computer Entertainment

The movie based on the popular PlayStation-exclusive Uncharted franchise just found its director in Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Night at the Museum), according to Deadline. This isn’t his first brush with video game-inspired movies, as Mojang previously rejected his plans for a Goonies-esque Minecraft movie.

While Levy hasn’t necessarily directed all of the Stranger Things episodes, he’s certainly been busy. He also produced Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner’s upcoming sci-fi and horror film, Arrival.

Things have been rocky from the start for the Uncharted movie; shooting was supposed to start in early 2015, but that was with another director (Seth Gordon) who ended up leaving the project, and it never came to fruition. The same happened with its original writer, Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team), who left to work on Sony’s Bad Boys For Life with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series just wrapped up earlier this year — or at least, the Nathan Drake games did — with the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
