Dota 2's second championship season begins with The Boston Major

Main event is in December, offers $3 million prize pool

The first tournament on Dota 2's second season of major events will be The Boston Major, Valve announced yesterday, and it will feature a $3 million prize pool.

The Boston Major presented by PGL is Dec. 7 to Dec. 10 at Wang Theater in Boston. A field of 16 teams will compete in a single-elimination bracket of best-of-three matches in Dota 2. The final round will be a best-of-five series between the semifinalists.

The Boston Major will be preceded by an open qualifying round Oct. 23-26, followed by regional qualifiers Oct. 27-30. A group stage will be set following qualifiers, and the top 16 teams from that round on Dec. 3 and 4 will advance to the Main Event.

Valve says that tickets to the Main Event will be available for sale beginning Friday, Oct. 14.

Valve inaugurated Dota 2's Major Championship series last fall. It began with the Frankfurt, Shanghai and Manila Majors, culminating in The International 2016, with an esports record $20.7 million prize pool. The other three tournaments all offered $3 million prize pools.
