After more than two years since Guardians of the Galaxy was released in theaters, director James Gunn remains adamant about two things: there’s an Easter egg in the film and no one has discovered it yet.
Last September, Gunn took part in an impromptu Facebook Q&A session and revealed that there was an Easter egg — a major one — that fans hadn’t discovered. Since then, Gunn has been bombarded with people who think they’ve discovered it asking if that was the Easter Egg he was hinting at. Each time, they’re met with a disappointing “no” from the director.
Today, one fan finally accused Gunn of leading people on and trolling fans. In response, Gunn promised that if there was no Easter egg, he would give them $100,000, adding that they could use the Facebook post as a legal document.
Gunn has said that he wants nothing more than for people to discover it. He’s tried to hint at what it could be on Twitter and Facebook but to no avail from anyone. The director is currently in post-production on his sequel to the film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, and has confirmed there will be Easter eggs in that as well.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 hits theaters April 25, 2017.
Correction: An earlier version of this story reported that he was going to give $100,000 to the fan who found it.
