Vin Diesel has spoken out about the new plot arc in The Fate of the Furious, calling the twist inevitable for the franchise.
In a new Facebook video, Diesel spoke about the importance of family to the series. The actor said that it’s not only a significant change, but one that had to happen eventually and this seemed like the best time to do so.
“We’ve been talking about family for so many pictures, and it was inevitable that there would be a chapter that would challenge that concept of family,” Diesel said. “The dark place that Dom goes to ... well, I guess you’ll just have to see the movie.”
Diesel added that it would all make sense when audiences see the movie, but didn’t allude to what that meant. The most common theory online is that Dom is being blackmailed by the newest villain, Cipher (Charlize Theron). Diesel never addresses those comments, but does add that he’s always fought to make the movies something significant and appease fans. He knows how important the characters are to the community, and in the video, reiterates multiple times that everything will be explained when the movie is finally released.
Since the trailer debuted on Dec. 11, it has amassed nearly 6 million views. It premiered in Times Square during a Facebook Live event featuring the cast.
The Fate of the Furious hits theaters April 14, 2017.
